Ismael Valdez Dutchover, 76, our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and
friend to many, and Anita Hernandez Dutchover, 74, our beloved mother, grandmother,
greatgrandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 20, 2021,
surrounded by their children. The void left by their absence will be impossible to fill and they will forever
be in our hearts.
Ismael and Anita grew up together in Balmorhea. They were high school sweethearts whose love
blossomed and resulted in a union that lasted the rest of their lives. They were married on December
16, 1969 and were blessed with seven children who were their constant focus and joy. Both were
lifelong fans of the Balmorhea Bears, following the team long after their children, who played and
cheered for the Bears, had graduated, and moved on with their careers. There are many colorful stories
of travels to the football games in the old station wagon. They were both so excited to watch the Bears
win the state championship just a few weeks ago.
Ismael and Anita loved their church family and instilled in their children their strong and abiding faith.
With seven children, they completely filled their pew each Sunday. With a reputation for good behavior
to uphold, Ismael managed to keep all their youthful energy in check with just a certain “look” down the
pew.
Ismael was a decorated veteran who served honorably in the Vietnam war. After his military service, he
spent the rest of his career serving his community as a Reeves County Commissioner and as a barber to
the Balmorhea community for many years. His campaign parties were always a hit and he was beloved
by the entire community. Ismael loved fishing, bingo and going to the casino but most of all he loved
spending time with his family.
Anita was a loving and devoted wife for 51 years and was a fiercely dedicated Mom to all her children.
That love extended to others as well. Family came first and was above all else to Anita, a value she
instilled in all those around her. Anita also loved playing bingo, gambling, and shopping, and, like
Ismael, spending time with her family was her greatest joy.
Ismael and Anita are survived by their children, Lisa Escovedo (Arturo), Sandra Dyba (Andrew), Cynthia
Dutchover, Tammy Salinas (Lorenzo), Frances Dutchover (Jaime Mendoza), Ismael Dutchover Jr., Brenda
Dutchover (John Stokes).
