Jackie L. Hammond

Jackie Hammond, 86, passed away on February 14, 2025, in Odessa, Texas. 

Jackie was born in Lott, Texas, on April 17, 1938, to the late Mack and Inez Swoopes. She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. She was married to the late Lee Roy Hammond for over 53 years. 

She loved giving and caring for the needs of others. Her profession was in the medial field where she worked as a registered nurse (RN) until she retired. She was a very vibrant and independent woman who loved her family and lived life to the fullest.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Roy Hammond; parents, Mack and Inez Swoops; brothers, Essie D. Swoopes, Mack (Choky) Swoopes; sisters, Willie Ruth (Ruth) Houston, Verna May (Peaches) Hawkins, Vinnie Jean (Red) Bledsoe and Billie Swoopes; and a special nephew, Tony Swoopes, whom she helped raise.

She leaves to cherish her memory; one son, Michael L. (Veronica) Hammond; a niece whom she helped raise; Tisha Swoopes; one granddaughter, Courtney Grimes; a dog, Lil’ Boy, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation is set for Thursday February 20, 2025, from 1pm-9pm at Martinez Funeral Home chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 21, 2025, at St. Matthew Baptist Church located at 809 Barrett Avenue in Odessa; Reverend Gerald Davis officiating, son Michael Hammond sharing words and Rev Michael J Moore delivering the message.

 Burial will follow at the Ector County Cemetery in the Rosehill section. 

Pallbearers will be Todd Swoopes, Theo Hammond, Donnie Johnson, Rev. James Webbs, Rev. Steven Bell, and Rev. Darren Willis.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Azarov, Dr. Ayyagari, and the 4th floor CCU nurses and staff at Medical Center Hospital of Odessa, St. Matthews Baptist Church family, Ms. Peggy Hemphill, Mr. Milton Matthews, Ms. Armie Alvarado, and Ms. Ruby Givens.
