Lee Hammond

February 3, 1939 — January 8, 2016

Lee Roy Hammond, 76, of Odessa, passed away on January 8th at Medical Center Hospital.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm on Wednesday, January 15th at Martinez Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday January 16th at Saint Matthews Baptist Church with Reverend Christopher Redden,
officiating. Burial will follow at Ector County Cemetery Rose Hill.
Arrangements are by Martinez Funeral Home. under the direction of Funeral Directors Tony Lujan & Nancy Olvera.

Lee was born in Stamford, Texas on February 3, 1939 to the late Willie Hammond, Sr. and Myrtle Johnson Hammond.
He graduated from Blackshear Junior-Senior High School and attended Odessa Junior College. He was married for
54 years to his high school sweetheart, Jackie Swoopes. He was an entrepreneur and co-owner and the backbone of Lee Hammond, Inc.,
the family barbeque business, where he worked for 38. He also retired from the United States Army
as a Master Sergeant (E-8) after 21 years of service and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
He was awarded two Bronze Star Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal,
the National Defense Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
As an entrepreneur, Lee was a pillar in the black community and received many awards and recognitions to include, the
Black Chamber of Commerce Permian-Basin President's Award and the Living Legend Award.

Lee is preceded in death by both parents, Willie Hammond, Sr. and Myrtle Mae Morris and four brothers,
Leodis Hammond, Willie Hammond, Jr., Wayne Hammond and Donald Hammond.

Those he leaves to cherish his loving memory, include his wife, Jackie Hammond; one son, Michael Lee Hammond (Veronica); one sister,
Myrtle Faye Webbs; one brother, Aubrey (Denise) Hammond; one sister-in-law, Billie Swoopes; one granddaughter
, Courtney Grimes; two uncles, Ben Johnson (Leola) and Billy Ray Johnson; one aunt, Sallie T. Carey (Newton); a special niece and nephew,
Tisha Swoopes and Tony Swoopes, whom he helped to raise; a mother figure, Frizella Whitiker, and; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers will be James Webbs Jr., Theo Hammond, John Bowser, Geovarsey Mitchell, Tony Swooopes, Michael Carter, Todd Swoopes and Jerald Swoopes.

The family of Lee Hammond wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Shirley Arkadie, Dr. McLeary and the Home Hospice staff,
the 4th floor ICU 2, and the 7th and 8th floor staff at Medical Center Hospital for providing outstanding care during this difficult time.
