Leslie Shaw-Compton

After a hard and gallant fight with cancer, Leslie Paulette Shaw-Compton, 59, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018 at Medical Center Hospital. She was born September 27, 1958 in Waco, Texas to the union of Lester Shaw and Beulah Porter Shaw. Leslie was raised and baptized at St. Matthew Baptist Church under the pastorage of her uncle Rev. Dr. Rufus McClain.

She attended school in ECISD graduating from Ector High School in 1977. Leslie also attended Odessa College. Leslie was a pharmacy technician and worked at several hospitals in the Dallas area for the last 5 years. She worked at Basin Communications as a dispatcher where she was the evening supervisor. She received the honor of Employee of the Year for 2017.

Leslie had a quirky sense of humor but was a no-nonsense boss. She was an avid reader. Leslie had a knack of drawing people to her. She had a large extended family who sometimes called her mom. Leslie was truly different.

Leslie is preceded in death by her father, Lester P. Shaw Sr., her sisters, Francis Sharlin Shaw and Sandra Shaw; grandparents; uncles, Charles, George, Fred, McKinley Porter and Howard J. Shaw; aunts, Minnie Davis and Nora Wiley.

Leslie leaves to cherish her memory: her son Dedrick E. Rivers; granddaughter (the sunshine of her life) Journey DAnn Rivers, her mother, Beulah Shaw; her beloved brother, Lester P. Shaw Jr, all of Odessa, TX; aunts and uncles, Dorothy Scott and husband Leslie (Dallas, TX), Theresa Shaw (Dallas, TX), Mittie Powell (Waco, TX), Darrell Shaw and wife Donna (Waco, TX), Billy Shaw and wife Lanette (Giddings, TX), Gorman Alex Shaw and wife Esta (Wichita, KS), Laura Sanders (Houston), Madison Porter and wife Cheryl (Houston, TX), Hamilton Porter (Houston, TX), Nora White (Los Lunas, NM), 3 extended grandchildren; six extended children plus a host of other relatives and friends.
Leslie will lie in state at Martinez Funeral Home, Thursday, June 14, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2018 at St. Matthew Baptist Church with eulogy by Rev. E. J. Miller and Rev. Christopher Redden officiating. Interment will follow at Ector County Cemetery, Odessa Garden II Section. Services entrusted to Martinez Funeral Home.
